Virginia Opens Play at ITA Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE Main draw play began Saturday at the ITA East Region Championships in Norfolk, Va. with the Cavaliers having two doubles teams advance to the round of 16.
Both Virginia doubles teams won a pair of matches Saturday to reach the round of 16. The No. 4 seeded team of Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) and Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) topped George Washington’s Nadia Demidenko and Kendall Swenson and UMBC’s Cornelia Carapcea and Pascaline Cette to advance. The No. 9 seeded duo of Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) and Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) advanced with wins over Sarah Lotto and Jenny Shlar of Penn State and Lauren Bates and Anna Edelman of Binghamton on Saturday.
The Cavaliers had a tough first day of singles as all three players in action fell in the round of 128. Lara Alexander (London, England), who had won a pair of matches Friday in the qualifying draw to reach the main draw, along with Yahner and Rales fell in the first round Saturday. Stevens and Pereira are both seeded and received first round byes. Both will open singles play in the tournament on Sunday.
The tournament continues on Sunday and runs through Tuesday.
