Holiday Helping Hand

The Virginia softball team was in the holiday spirit and paid a visit to Red Hill Elementary to help make gingerbread houses last month as part of the squad’s monthy team bonding activity. Whitney Holstun, a co-captain for Virginia, helped organized the event after seeing in advertisement in Ruffner Hall for an after-school “game club and a date was arranged.

The team helped set up and tear down extra tables in addition to helping the class make gingerbread houses. “I think the kids enjoyed it, and we got to eat a little bit of candy!” said Holstun.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Eileen Schmidt, the Cavalier softball team continues to participate in community service events whenever possible. Said Holstun: “Anytime you have a common experience outside the realm of softball, it allows your team to “let down their hair” and also allows us to get to know people on a more personal level.”

Virgina opens the 2008 campaign next month at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
