CHARLOTTESVILLE The Virginia women’s basketball team opens Atlantic Coast Conference play on Sunday, traveling to Wake Forest for a 2 p.m. contest in Joel Memorial Coliseum. The game will be streamed live on ACC Select at www.accselect.com/virginia/basketball/.
The Cavaliers, winners of four-straight games and six of their last seven, are receiving votes in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll and have an overall record of 10-4.
In its last outing, UVa dismantled Rider, 98-51, Wednesday night in Lawrenceville, N.J. Sharne Zoll led five starters in double figures with 21 points and also dished out six assists. Monica Wright added 16 points and Tara McKnight netted a career-high 15 points on five 3-pointers. Kristen London and Enong Stovall added 10 points apiece for the Cavaliers.
Zoll enters Sunday’s game just five points shy of reaching 1,000 for her career. The fourth-year point guard is also chasing the all-time assists mark at both UVa and in the ACC, as she has dished out 642. Former UVa great Dawn Staley (1989-1992) holds the all-time mark as she had 729 assists during her career.
Virginia has a record of 20-10 all-time in ACC openers since conference regular-season play began in 1978.
Virginia has dominated the series with Wake Forest, holding a 58-2 advantage. The teams met once last year, with the Cavaliers prevailing, 77-70, in Charlottesville on Jan. 11, 2007. In that game, Zoll finished with 17 points including a school-record tying 12-for-12 performance from the free throw line. UVa has won seven-straight in the series.
Wake Forest (12-3, 0-1 ACC) dropped its last contest, 83-49, Thursday night against Maryland. The Demon Deacons are led by Alex Tchangoue (11.0 ppg, 7.8 rpg) and Corinne Groves (11.5 ppg, 6.6 rpg). The squad is receiving a vote in the Associated Press Top 25.
