CHARLOTTESVILLE Fourth-year point guard Sharne Zoll netted her 1,000th-career point and five Cavaliers scored in double figures to lead the Virginia women’s basketball team to an 89-53 victory over Rhode Island Wednesday at John Paul Jones Arena.
Virginia (12-4) has won six straight games, eight of its last nine and seven in a row in its home arena. Zoll led the charge with a typical play-making performance, finishing with 11 points, six assists, two rebounds and two steals.
With the Cavaliers leading 21-13 in the first half, Zoll hit a jumpshot and followed it up with a 3-pointer at the 9:43 mark to put her over the 1,000-point plateau and extend the UVa lead to 13 points. Those five points were part of an incredible 27-0 first-half run by the Cavaliers that put the game out of reach early.
With a 41-24 halftime lead, Virginia utilized its bench in the second half and the result was an extremely balanced offense. Third-year Abby Robertson was just shy of a career-high but scored 13 points, while Britnee Millner, Kristen London, Kelly Hartig and Tara McKnight all contributed key minutes.
Monica Wright led all players with 23 points, in her 14th-consecutive double-digit scoring effort and second-straight 20+ point performance. She added five rebounds and three steals.
Posting her seventh double-double of the year was Aisha Mohammed, who poured in 15 points and hauled down 11 rebounds. Enong Stovall, earning her third-straight start, hit two 3-pointers and scored 12 points while grabbing four rebounds and three steals.
It was an all-around night for the Cavs, as Paulisha Kellum just missed double-figures with nine points and had a game-high five steals.
The Cavaliers now turn their attention to Virginia Tech, who visits John Paul Jones Arena on Sunday, Jan. 13. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
