CHARLOTTESVILLE The top ranked Virginia men’s tennis team kicks off the 2008 dual match season on Sunday as it hosts No. 43 William & Mary at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Match time is 1 p.m. and admission is free.
The Cavaliers are coming off a 30-4 campaign last year that concluded with a No. 2 national ranking and a trip to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. Six of seven starters from that squad return this season.
Virginia is led by senior Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India), the reigning NCAA singles champion and current No. 1 player in the ITA rankings. Junior Dominic Inglot (London, England) is No. 3 in the ITA rankings and senior Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) is ranked No. 12. Devvarman and Huey are No. 1 in the ITA doubles rankings, one of five Cavalier teams ranked in the top 50.
William & Mary participated in the NCAA Tournament last season, falling in the first round to eventual quarterfinalist NC State. The Tribe are led by Alex Cojanu and Keziel Juneau, who are ranked No. 33 in the ITA doubles rankings.
Virginia has won the last four meetings between the squads, including a 7-0 win in last year’s season opener in Williamsburg.
