CHARLOTTESVILLE Days after defeating Miami on the road, Virginia returns to the Sunshine State to face Florida State Saturday at 7 p.m. The game is being streamed live on ACC Select, and live audio is available through V Pass.
The Cavaliers (14-5, 3-1 ACC) have won eight of their last nine games and are looking to improve to 4-1 in the conference for the first time since the 2000-01 season. UVa continues to receive votes in the Associated Press Top 25. The Seminoles, meanwhile, have an overall record of 14-6 (4-1 in the ACC).
Virginia leads the all-time series with Florida State, 27-8, but the Seminoles are on a four-game win streak against the Cavaliers. The last UVa victory was at the 2005 ACC Tournament (71-67 OT).
Sophomore Monica Wright continues to lead Virginia on both ends of the floor. She leads the team by averaging 17.8 points per game, which ranks second in the ACC. The reigning ACC Rookie of the Year, Wright has been named the conference’s player of the week once this year and was also selected as a member of the Naismith Trophy preseason watch list. In league games only, Wright ranks third in the league by averaging 20.5 points per game.
Lyndra Littles and Aisha Mohammed also average double-figures in scoring for the Cavs. Littles contributes 16.0 ppg while Mohammed nearly boasts a double-double with 12.5 ppg and 8.8 rpg.
At point guard, senior Sharne Zoll is 60 assists away from tying the all-time assists mark (729), set by Dawn Staley (1989-92).
Rounding out the Cavalier starting lineup is sophomore Paulisha Kellum. She averages 9.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, and provides a complement to Zoll in the backcourt.
As a team, the Cavaliers rank eighth in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (39.3) and 31st in scoring offense (73.5 points per game.)
The Seminoles are led by Tanae Davis-Cain, who averages 13.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Also in double figures for FSU are Mara Freshour (12.2 ppg) and Jacinta Monroe (11.9).
In its last outing, Florida State edged Miami in overtime, 75-70, on Jan. 24. In ACC games, Florida State’s lone loss came at the ends of Duke (70-38, Jan. 11). Head coach Sue Semrau is in her 11th season in Tallahassee.
Up next for the Cavaliers is a return to John Paul Jones Arena for a contest with ACC foe NC State on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
