CHARLOTTESVILLEThe Virginia men’s basketball team looks for its second Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season on Sunday (Jan. 27) when the Cavaliers host Georgia Tech at John Paul Jones Arena. The game, which is sold out, is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. and will be televised by Fox Sports Net.
The game will also be on V Pass Live Audio at virginiasports.com.
Virginia will be attempting to bounce back after a 69-67 loss at Florida State on Wednesday (Jan. 23). The Cavaliers are now 11-6 overall and 1-3 in the ACC.
Junior forward/guard Mamadi Diane and senior forward Adrian Joseph led the Cavaliers against Florida State. Diane scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed five rebounds in 37 minutes of action. He was 6-12 from the field, including 5-9 from three-point range, and he made all four of his free throws. After scoring 20 points in UVa’s victory over Boston College on Jan. 19, Diane’s 21 points against the Seminoles marked the first time in his collegiate career he’s scored at least 20 points in consecutive games.
Joseph scored 17 points and had a game-high eight rebounds. He was 7-12 from the field, including 3-7 from three-point range.
Senior guard Sean Singletary added 11 points and seven assists for the Cavaliers. He has now scored in double figures in 39 consecutive games, the longest current streak in the ACC. His seven assists enabled him to move past Othell Wilson into fourth place on Virginia’s career assists list with 497 assists.
Singletary continues to lead the Cavaliers in scoring and assists. He is averaging 18.5 points and 6.6 assists a game. Singletary also leads the ACC in assists.
Joseph is Virginia’s leading rebounder with an average of 7.6 a game.
Georgia Tech enters Sunday’s game with an overall record of 9-9 and a 2-3 record in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets have won their last two games, conference victories at home over Virginia Tech (81-70) on Jan. 19 and at NC State (77-74) on Wednesday (Jan. 23).
Senior guard Anthony Morrow leads Georgia Tech in scoring with an average of 14.7 points a game. Also averaging in double figures in scoring are junior guard Lewis Clinch at 11.3 points a game and senior forward Jeremis Smith with an average of 10.3 points a game. Smith leads the Yellow Jackets in rebounding with an average of 7.2 a game.
As a team, Georgia Tech is averaging 76.9 points a game and shooting 47.4 percent from the field, including 38.4 percent from three-point range.
Paul Hewitt is in his eighth season as the head coach at Georgia Tech and his 11th season as a collegiate head coach. His Georgia Tech teams have compiled an overall record of 136-104 and participated in the NCAA Tournament four times, advancing to the championship game in 2004.
Georgia Tech leads the series with Virginia 36-28 and the Yellow Jackets have won 15 of the last 19 games in the series. The Cavaliers have won 17 of the 27 games played in Charlottesville and won the only meeting between the two teams last season, 75-69, at John Paul Jones Arena.
