CHARLOTTESVILLE After helping the top-ranked Cavalier men’s tennis team to wins at No. 8 Illinois and No. 12 Notre Dame, Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) was named ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, conference officials announced Tuesday. The senior went 2-0 in both singles and doubles on the week to earn the honor.

The honor is the first of Angelinos’ career and the first by a Cavalier this season.

On Friday, Angelinos was instrumental in the Cavaliers’ 4-3 win at No. 8 Illinois. He won the final match on the courts to give Virginia the win, which snapped the Illini’s 15-match home winning streak and was just the third home loss for Illinois since 2002.

At No. 6 singles, Angelinos fell behind to Brandon Davis, losing the first set, 6-3, and trailed 5-4 in the second set. With Davis serving for the match, he took a 40-30 lead for a match point. Angelinos drew him toward the net and hit a passing shot to fight off the match point that could have clinched the dual match for Illinois. Angelinos broke Davis’ serve in the game to even the set at 5-5 and eventually won a second set tiebreaker to draw even in the match. With the momentum from his rally in the second set, Angelinos took the final set 6-2 to clinch the match for Virginia.

Angelinos also won in doubles against Illinois, teaming with Lee Singer for an 8-4 win over Waylon Chin and Marc Spicijaric.

On Sunday, Angelinos recorded a pair of wins during the Cavaliers’ 5-2 win at Notre Dame. He and Singer defeated Tyler Davis and Santiago Montoya 8-4 at No. 3 doubles before Angelinos scored a 6-1, 6-3 win over Daniel Stahl at No. 6 singles.

Virginia returns to action on Friday as it hosts intrastate rival VCU. Match time at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club is 6 p.m. and admission is free.
