GREENSBORO, N.C.Former Virginia standout guard John Crotty is the Cavaliers’ 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament Legend. ACC Commissioner John Swofford announced today (Feb. 18) the 2008 ACC Basketball Legends who will be honored at the ACC Tournament next month. The tournament is scheduled for March 13-16 in Charlotte, N.C.

The 2008 ACC Tournament Legends also include Kenny Anderson (Georgia Tech), Elden Campbell (Clemson), Len Chappell (Wake Forest), Lorenzo Charles (NC State), Glen Combs (Virginia Tech), Bill Curley (Boston College), Charles “Lefty” Driesell (Maryland), Mike Gminski (Duke), Tim James (Miami), Dean Smith (North Carolina) and Charlie Ward (Florida State).

Crotty lettered for the Cavaliers four times from 1987-91 and still holds Virginia’s records for career assists with 683 and assists in a season with 214 (1989-90). He had 14 assists in a game twice and that ties for Virginia’s single-game record. He ranks 12th on the Cavaliers’ career scoring list with 1,646 points and he had 12 double-doubles in points and assists during his Virginia career.

Crotty was a third-team All-ACC selection in 1990 and 1991. He was a first-team All-ACC Tournament choice in 1991 and a second-team All-ACC Tournament selection in 1990. He also earned honorable mention All-America honors from The Associated Press and The Sporting News in 1990.

Crotty was a member of the ACC All-Academic men’s basketball teams in 1990 and 1991.

Virginia participated in the NCAA Tournament three times during Crotty’s career. He was named to the NCAA Southeast Regional All-Tournament Team in 1989 when the Cavaliers advanced to the regional finals.

Crotty was a team captain as a junior and a senior. He played in 129 games at Virginia and started the last 104 games of his collegiate career.

The ACC Legends will be honored at the annual ACC Basketball Legends Brunch scheduled for March 15 at the conference tournament. The brunch is hosted by television personalities Tim Brant and Mike Hogewood at the Charlotte Westin Hotel beginning at 10 a.m. Tickets, priced at $35 each or a table of 10 for $350, can be purchased by calling the Charlotte Sports Commission at 704/688-8531.
