CHARLOTTESVILLE After averaging 24.5 points per game, hitting a game-winning shot in double-overtime and tallying her 1,000th-career point in two Cavalier victories, Virginia sophomore Monica Wright was named the ACC’s Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
The Woodbridge, Va., native earns the honor for the second time this season. The reigning ACC Rookie of the Year and a member of the Naismith Trophy Preseason Watch List, Wright exploded offensively in the Cavaliers’ double-overtime victory over Georgia Tech on Sunday for a career-high 28 points. Her jumpshot with less than three seconds left lifted UVa to victory.
Earlier in the week against Boston College (Feb. 28), Wright became the third Cavalier to reach the 1,000-career point plateau this year. She finished with 21 points against the Eagles.
For the week, Wright averaged 24.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.7 steals.
