COLLEGE PARK, Md. No. 5 Maryland used four points and six draw controls from senior Dana Dobbie to upset the No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers, 8-5, Tuesday evening at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The loss marks the first of the season for the Cavaliers and the first win for the Terrapins over Virginia in the last eight tries.
Sophomore Kaitlin Duff led the Cavaliers with two goals, while junior Ashley McCulloch extended her scoring streak to 27 straight games, tallying a goal and two assists. Senior Megan O’Malley notched a goal with an assist and sophomore Brittany Kalkstein added a goal.
In goal, senior Kendall McBrearty stopped six shots and collected five ground balls. Kalkstein scooped up three ground balls and won two draw controls. Defensively, seniors Claire Bordley and Alice Hughey each caused two turnovers.
For Maryland, Dobbie led the way with three goals and an assist, while Lauren Cohen had two goals and an assist.
Two early draw controls led to two quick Terrapin goals to open the contest. Caitlyn McFadden tallied the first score 30 seconds into play before Dobbie and Katie Princiotto connected for a second sloppy goal at the 27:22 mark.
Kalkstein won the ensuing draw control and the Cavaliers were able to fire a few shots at Maryland keeper Allie Buote, but only one managed to find the back of the net, and it was taken away for a crease violation.
Scrappy midfield defense helped the Cavaliers maintain possession, but it wasn’t enough as Maryland capitalized on another offensive opportunity at 13:49.
Dobbie tallied her second point of the contest at 13:49, before Casey Magor made it a 4-0 Terrapin advantage by the 12:13 mark.
Virginia’s scoring drought to this point marked the longest start to the game without a goal for the Cavaliers all season, including the first time trailing by more than one goal.
After another scoreless stretch, the Cavaliers manage to rattle off two goals within 30 seconds to cut Maryland’s lead to two heading into halftime. McCulloch set up Kalkstein for the first score at 5:26, before McCulloch fired a goal herself past Buote at 4:55.
Lauren Cohen opened the second half on a scoring mission for the Terrapins, notching two straight scores within 2:30 of the break.
The Cavaliers attempted to respond with a score themselves, but a second goal was taken away from Virginia due to invasion of the crease. It wasn’t until the 22:07 mark that McCulloch intercepted a pass on Maryland’s clear attempt and dished the ball to Duff who fired a shot into the back of the net for the Cavaliers.
Duff then tallied a second straight score for Virginia, sticking a pass from McCulloch into the top right corner of the goal.
Maryland tacked on another at 10:02, before O’Malley answered for Virginia with a score less than a minute later. The Terrapins used a stall tactic for the next few minutes of play, until McBrearty came out of the cage to force Maryland to shoot on an open net.
Amanda Spinnenweber took the shot for Maryland, but McBrearty came flying through the crease scooping up the shot enabling Virginia to have another chance. But, Buote came up huge for the Terps, stopping her 10th shot of the game.
Maryland carried the ball down the field and gave Spinnenweber another chance, one in which she capitalized on, slinging a shot into the open net with 48 seconds remaining.
Maryland won the ensuing draw and held on for the 8-5 win, its first over Virginia in the last eight meetings.
Up next, the Cavaliers (3-1, 1-1 ACC) will travel to State College, Pa., for a Friday match-up with No. 18 Penn State. Opening draw is slated for 5 p.m.
