CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia junior right-handed pitcher Jacob Thompson has been named to the Roger Clemens Award Watch List. It marks the second year in a row that Thompson has been named to the initial Clemens Award watch list. Last season, he was one of three finalists for the award.
The Danville, Va., native became Virginia’s all-time wins leader by virtue of his win last Friday against Siena. It was his 23rd career victory, topping former Cavaliers Sean Doolittle (2005-07), Joe Koshansky (2001-04) and Seth Greisinger (1994-96), who all finished with 22 career wins.
Thompson, 2-0 this season and 23-4 in his career, currently boasts a 0.00 ERA this season and has lowered his career ERA to 1.91 tops in school history. With 194 career strikeouts, he is one strikeout shy of the school’s career top 10 and also is inching closer to the top 10 in innings pitched and games started.
Thompson is one of five candidates from the ACC, joining Eric Erickson (Miami), Ben Hunter (Wake Forest), Eryk McConnell (NC State) and Ryan Strauss (Florida State).
The list will be narrowed to 10 candidates in mid-May, then to three in late May or early June. The winner will be announced in early summer at a date to be announced.
Virginia (10-0) next plays at 3 p.m. Friday at NC State.
