CHARLOTTESVILLEVirginia senior guard Sean Singletary (Philadelphia, Pa.) is a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection for the third consecutive season. Singletary joins Ralph Sampson (1981-83) and Bryant Stith (1990-92) as the only Cavaliers to be named first-team All-ACC three times.
With the addition of Singletary and Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina this season, 25 men’s basketball players in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference have now earned first-team All-ACC recognition three times.
“It’s only fitting that at the end of a brilliant career, Sean be named first-team All-ACC for the third time,” said Virginia head coach Dave Leitao. “That speaks not only to the success he’s had individually or the success the program has had, but most importantly the consistency of his performance. To be linked with Ralph Sampson and Bryant Stith is a tremendous honor that will live on in Virginia basketball lore.”
A three-time team co-captain, Singletary ranks in the top 10 in Virginia men’s basketball history in six different career categories. On Sunday (March 9) he became the fifth UVa player to score 2,000 career points. He ranks second in steals (192), third in assists (556), fourth in three-point field goals made (216), fourth in free throws made (550), fifth in scoring (2,002 points) and ninth in field goals made (618).
Singletary is one of just three players in ACC history to have 2,000 career points, 500 career assists and 400 career rebounds. He has scored in double figures in his last 51 games. Singletary is averaging 19.9 points, 5.9 assists and 3.9 rebounds a game this season. He scored a career-high 41 points at Miami on March 1 and is averaging 21.5 points a game in ACC games.
Singletary ranks second in the ACC in assists, third in scoring, fifth in free throw percentage (.856, 166-194), sixth in minutes played (990, 34.14 mpg.) and seventh in steals (52, 1.79 spg.).
Also named to the All-ACC first team in addition to Singletary and Hansbrough were Tyrese Rice (Boston College), DeMarcus Nelson (Duke) and Jack McClinton (Miami). The All-ACC second team is comprised of Greivis Vasquez (Maryland), James Gist (Maryland), Wayne Ellington (North Carolina), A.D. Vassallo (Virginia Tech) and K.C. Rivers (Clemson).
