CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia assistant softball coach Brooke Monroe was recently inducted into the Greater Peoria (Ill.) Sports Hall of Fame. Monroe, in her first season with the Cavalier softball program, was a standout at Morton High School in Morton, Ill., before moving on to play in the collegiate ranks at Indiana University. She was one of seven individuals and two teams inducted into the Hall.

“This honor is very special to me,” Monroe said. “I am humbled to be a part of the distinct list of past and current inductees.”

Monroe helped Morton to four consecutive Class AA state tournament semifinal appearances, including two second and two third-place finishes, and a four-year record of 127-24.

As a Hoosier, Monroe started every game during her four-year career and led IU in at-bats, doubles, runs, home runs and RBI for three seasons. A three-time All-Big Ten selection, Monroe currently stands fourth in career doubles (40), fifth in RBI (94), sixth in home runs (24) and eighth in at-bats (607) in the Indiana record book.

Monroe went on to coach at Purdue for three seasons, while also earning her master’s degree upon graduating from IU. She also had one-year coaching stints at Portland State and Kentucky before joining the Virginia staff last June.

The Cavaliers (7-13, 2-1 ACC) play host to Florida State this weekend at The Park, beginning with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Friday. The first game will be available on ACC Select.
