CHARLOTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia softball team (7-15, 2-4 ACC) was swept by Florida State (21-9, 4-2 ACC) after losing the final game of the series, 5-1, Saturday at the Park.
The Cavaliers scored one run on three hits and committed one error while the Seminoles scored five times on 11 hits and had no errors. Fourth-year Meghan O’Leary, second-year Kelly Haller and third-year Carly Winger recorded singles for Virginia.
Karla Wilburn (4-7) took the loss in the circle for UVa. Wilburn pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits. Whitney Holstun came on in relief and went 4 2/3 and allowed three runs on seven hits. Hostun also fanned two batters.
Florida State’s Tiffany McDonald threw a complete game and struck out 10 Virginia batters.
The Seminoles scored first in the top of the second. After a Ashley Stager walk, Whitney Buckmon bunted down a single to put runners on first and second with no outs. Stager would later be thrown out trying to steal third, when Haller fired over a rocket to Winger, who was covering the base. Buckmon advanced to second on the play and would score on a Camille Garcia RBI single to center.
Florida State made it 2-0 in the top of the third after a solo homer to center by Carly Wynn. But Virginia got one run back in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Alison Pittman walked and stole second. After a Lauren McCaskey walk, Haller singled to center to score Pittman. McCaskey was left stranded on third.
In the sixth, Virginia had a run taken away when pinch runner Jennifer Bowles was called out for leaving early trying to score from third base on a sacrifice fly. The run would have cut the lead to one.
FSU added two more in the top of the seventh inning to extend its lead to four runs.
Virginia will play host to Radford with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday at The Park.
