Junior attacker Jenny Hauser came to Virginia in 2006 to play lacrosse after spending her first two seasons at Boston University. As a freshman she was considered one of the nation’s best newcomers and was a Tewaaraton Trophy candidate in 2006. After sitting out last season under the NCAA’s transfer rules, Hauser is back on the field and has already made an incredible impact on the team. Her sister, Julie, played at Virginia from 2003 to 2006. The Cavaliers travel to Princeton this Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.
After just two seasons as a Terrier, you became one of Boston University’s best attackers of all-time. What made you decide to transfer?
I just felt that Boston University wasn’t the right fit. And then after attending my sister’s graduation from UVa, I got a feel for the university and the people. I loved everything about the campus and I knew the team, plus it was closer to my home. All of these factors affected my decision and I couldn’t be happier with my choice.
What influence did your sister Julie playing for Virginia have on your decision to play here?
My sister had a great college experience, and that was something I wanted to have too. Even now, after graduation, she has remained close with the coaches and her teammates. I missed playing with her by a year but because of all the ties she has at Virginia, it has helped make the adjustment easy.
How has your transition from Boston University to Virginia been?
The initial year was tough because of all the credits I had to make up due to transferring and because I had to red-shirt. But, it was all worth it to be able to compete and fully participate this year. The coaches and my teammates have been so welcoming and supportive from the start.
Now that you’ve played a game as a Cavalier, is it what you expected it would be?
It has been everything I expected, and more. It was really exciting for me to put the uniform on for the first time because I had been anticipating my first game with UVa for so long. We’ve worked hard all year and it feels good to play with such a close team.
What are you most excited about this season?
I am most excited about being on the field to compete.
What has been your proudest moment?
Playing in our first game has been one of my proudest moments. It took a lot to get to that point, so I was happy that I worked through it all to get back on the field.
