CHARLOTTESVILLE After leading the top-ranked Cavalier men’s tennis team to three ACC road victories last week, Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) was named ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, conference officials announced Tuesday. The senior went 3-0 in singles and 4-0 doubles on the week to earn the honor.
The honor is the seventh of Devvarman’s career and second of the season. Last year, he led the conference with four ACC Player of the Week selections. The award is the third of the season for the Cavaliers as Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) was honored on Jan. 29.
Last week, Devvarman led Virginia to a 7-0 win at Virginia Tech, a 7-0 win at Georgia Tech and a 6-1 win at Clemson. He posted victories over a pair of ranked singles opponents, defeating 55th-ranked Albert Larregola of Virginia Tech (6-1, 6-1) and 72nd-ranked Guillermo Gomez from Georgia Tech (3-6, 6-2, 6-3). Devvarman also notched a 6-2, 6-4 win against Clemson’s Carlos Alvarez. With the victories, he has won 21 consecutive singles matches, a new Virginia singles-season record.
Devvarman paired up with Treat Huey to extend their doubles winning streak against ACC opponents to 17 straight, dating back to the 2007 season. The top-ranked tandem in the nation defeated both Virginia Tech’s Larregola and Nicolas Delgado de Robles and Georgia Tech’s Scott Blackmon and Ryan Smith, 8-2, and shut out Clemson’s Ike Belk and Derek DiFazio, 8-0.
The Cavaliers will return home this weekend to host a pair of conference foes. Virginia hosts No. 26 Miami Friday at 3 p.m. and No. 10 Florida State Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches are slated for the Snyder Tennis Center and admission is free.
