CHARLOTTESVILLE The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team returns home for the first time in nearly a month as it hosts a pair of highly ranked ACC foes this weekend. The Cavaliers meet No. 26 Miami Friday at 3 p.m. and No. 10 Florida State Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches are scheduled for the Snyder Tennis Center, weather permitting.
The Cavaliers enter the weekend with an overall record of 19-0 and lead the ACC with a 5-0 conference mark. Virginia is one win away from recording 20 wins for a school-record sixth consecutive season.
Virginia is riding a school-record 25-match home winning streak, dating back to the 2006 season. The Cavaliers’ last loss at home was a 4-3 loss to Miami at the Snyder Tennis Center on Apr. 7, 2006 in the Hurricanes’ last visit to Charlottesville.
Since that loss to Miami, Virginia has won the last three meetings with the Hurricanes, 4-2 in the 2006 ACC Tournament, 4-0 in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, and 5-2 in the regular season meeting last year in Coral Gables.
Friday’s match will feature a probable top-five matchup at No. 1 singles between top-ranked Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Miami’s Daniel Vallverdu, ranked No. 4 in the ITA singles rankings. The Hurricanes enter the match with a 9-4 overall record and 2-2 ACC record.
Sunday’s match is a top-10 showdown as No. 10 Florida State comes to Charlottesville. Virginia has won the last five meetings with the Seminoles, including a 4-3 victory last year in Tallahassee. Florida State, who plays Friday at Virginia Tech, enter the weekend with a 13-3 overall record, 4-1 in the ACC.
This weekend the Cavaliers will also look to maintain their lead in the ITA Attendance Challenge. After the first two months of the season, Virginia led the nation in overall attendance with 4,208 fans seeing the Cavaliers in the first eight home matches of the season.
Admission to all regular season men’s tennis matches is free.
