Virginia Golf Team Begins ACC Play Friday

Charlottesville, VA The Virginia men’s golf team will play in the 55th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championship April 18-20 at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, N.C. This marks the seventh consecutive year the tournament has been contested at the Old North State Club. The 54-hole event will start at 8:30 a.m. each morning.
Virginia is paired with North Carolina and NC State during Friday’s opening round. Virginia’s lineup includes Kyle Stough, Will Collins, Conrad Von Borsig, Steven Rojas and Greg Carlin. Stough leads the Cavaliers with a 73.38 stroke average while Rojas is second at 73.40 and Collins is third at 73.55. Carlin’s average is 73.58 and Von Borsig figures at 74.57.
Last year the Cavaliers placed ninth overall with a team score of 878 for the second consecutive year. Virginia posted rounds of 293, 292 and 293. Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech tied for first place at 854 to share the championship. Florida State’s Jonax Blixt took medalist honors by one shot at 8-under 208. Von Borsig was UVa’s top finisher in 25th place at 219.
Five conference teams enter this weekend’s championship ranked in the top-25 of the latest Golfweek standings. Georgia Tech tops that list in eighth place while Florida State is 10th, Duke is ranked 15th, Clemson 18th and Wake Forest 25th. NC State (31st) and Virginia Tech (32nd) are just outside of the top-25.
Wake Forest has won the tournament 18 times, the most of any ACC school. Virginia has never won the event but was the runner-up in 1958 and 1996. Pete Arend became the only Cavalier to win the individual title at the 1955 championship.
