CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Play commenced at the 2008 Women’s Field Hockey National Championships over the weekend, and all four Cavalier players competing in the event saw action. Two of them, Paige Selenksi and Michelle Vittese, notched goals for their respective teams. The event, which runs through June 21, is being held at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va.

Vittese’s New Jersey squad, the Maryland/Virginia team that includes Cavaliers Shelly Edmonds and Kaitlyn Hiltz and Selenski’s Pennsylvania/California team have all posted 1-1 records after the first two days of round robin play.

New Jersey beat the South team Sunday by a score of 4-2 with Vittese scoring the winning goal. Both Edmonds and Hiltz saw action in Maryland/Virginia’s loss to the Midwest team, the lone team with two wins after two games. In addition, Selenski scored for Pennsylvania/California in its 6-1 rout over New England on Sunday.

USA Field Hockey has seven regional High Performance Training Centers around the nation. National team coaches at these centers identify and train potential National Team athletes through comprehensive training/skill enhancement sessions and premier level competitions. The centers allow athletes to train in regional areas close to their homes by some of the country’s top coaches. Each June athletes are chosen to represent the centers in the High Performance national championships.

Games resume Tuesday in Virginia Beach. For a complete schedule of the Women’s National Championships, click here.
