CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia head swimming coach Mark Bernardino announced Monday that Katie Robinson has been hired as an assistant coach at UVa. She will begin her duties Aug. 4.
“The entire staff is very pleased to welcome Katie Robinson to the Virginia swimming and diving family,” Bernardino said. “Katie is precisely what we were looking for when we initiated the search process. She is a decorated swimming athlete from a very strong Division I program and she has learned from some of the best coaches in the business, having swum under and coached with (former Texas head coach) Jill Sterkel, (Texas assistant coach) Jim Henry, (former Pacific head coach) Greg Meehan and (Texas head coach) Kim Brackin.
“Katie brings passion and energy to the program and she also brings different training philosophies and new training perspectives to our team,” Bernardino continued. “She is excited to begin this next phase of her coaching career at the University of Virginia and she wants to hit the ground running. Katie has a strong scientific background, has established recruiting contacts in various states around the country and is a person who will bring credibility, vitality and enthusiasm to the workplace every day.”
Robinson, a native of Dillsboro, Ind., arrives in Charlottesville after serving as a graduate assistant coach at the University of the Pacific during the 2007-08 campaign. At Pacific, Robinson aided in the training of both the men’s and women’s teams and assisted in recruiting. She also served as the Pacific Swim School director during her stint there.
“I am extremely excited and honored to join the UVa coaching staff,” Robinson said. “The academic prestige and consistent success of the swimming and diving teams create a great environment in which to work. I am also looking forward to coaching with each of the talented coaches on deck. Coach Bernardino is an inspiring coach that I am thrilled to learn from and under whom I can thrive.”
Robinson also has experience at the club level, serving as a coach for the Weiss and Weiss Aquatics club and also at the Longhorn swim camp.
An 11-time All-American at the University of Texas, Robinson was a three-time Big 12 champion in the 200 butterfly and is the conference record holder in the event. In 2004, she reached the semifinals in the 100 butterfly at the Olympic Trials.
In the classroom, Robinson was honored as a second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American (2007) and was the Big 12’s nominee for the NCAA Female of the Athlete of the Year as a senior.
Robinson earned her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Texas in 2007.
