CHARLOTTESVILLE The Virginia women’s tennis team continued play Saturday at the third annual UVa Winter Invitational began at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers had a strong performance on day two of the tournament, winning two doubles and five singles matches.

The doubles team of Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) won for the second consecutive day in Flight B, downing the Purdue team of Stephanie Wooten and Joanna Craven 8-6. In Flight C, the team of Hampton Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) and Lara Alexander (London, England) topped Purdue’s Anna Dzeva and Alejandra Boeker 8-2.

In singles, Virginia got a win in Flight A as Rales defeated Brooke Beier of Purdue, 6-0, 1-6, 6-4. Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) won for the second consecutive day, defeating Craven 7-5, 7-6. Alexander scored a win in Flight E as she topped Dzeva 6-0, 7-6. Williams won in Flight F, defeating Boeker 6-2, 6-3. Cathy Nimitz (Glen Allen, Va.) won in Flight G, defeating Whitney Reyes of Purdue 6-3, 6-3.

The tournament will conclude on Sunday’s as play will begin at 9 a.m. Admission is free.
