The Cavalier track and field teams will open up the 2008 portion of the indoor season with competition at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12, in Blacksburg, Va. Virginia will field a full side, sending representatives of most of the event groups to the Invitational as qualifying for the NCAA meet begins.

Three All-ACC indoors performers are back for the Cavaliers as Billie-Jo Grant (shot put), Alex Tatu (800m) and Jordan Orr (800m) return for Virginia. All three are also All-Americans, with Tatu and Orr earning the honor at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2007. These three combine with a host of veterans in a number of events that bring experience to the team as well as an influx of talented newcomers.

David Lewis opened the 2007-2008 season with a sixth-place finish in the heptathlon at Liberty in December; his personal-best mark in the event of 4997 ranks as one of the top performances in school history.

The event begins at 5 p.m. on Friday with three field events and the prelims of the women’s 55-meter dash.
