Charlottesville, VA The Virginia men’s golf team returns to the third annual Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic that runs Monday and Tuesday at Notre Dame’s Warren Golf Course (par 70, 7,023 yards). The tournament format includes 36 holes of play Monday and 18 on Tuesday. A field of 16 teams will compete for this year’s championship. Five teams in the field are ranked in the top 50 of this week’s Golfweek standings.
Virginia’s lineup will include freshman Ben Kohles, sophomores Amory Davis, Steven Rojas and Will Collins and junior Kyle Stough. The Cavaliers are paired with Notre Dame and Minnesota during the opening round that starts at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday’s final round includes a shotgun start at 8:20 a.m.
Last year Virginia placed fourth in a 12-team field behind senior Greg Carlin’s second-place finish.
Besides tournament host Notre Dame (and its “B” team), the remaining teams in the field are: No. 4 Arkansas, UC Davis, DePaul, Iowa, No. 3 Lamar, No. 41 Michigan State, No. 47 Minnesota, UNC Greensboro, North Florida, San Diego, San Francisco, Southeastern Louisiana and No. 49 VCU.
The Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic is UVa’s third tournament of the fall. The Cavaliers were seventh at the rain-shortened Maryland Intercollegiate and fourth at the VCU Shootout. Davis leads the team with a 70.60 stroke average while Kohles is second at 70.80.
