TULSA, Okla — A pair of Cavaliers advanced to the second round of qualifying of the ITA All-America Championships Monday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) and Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) both won opening round matches on the first day of qualifying.
Shabaz downed Calin Paar of Nebraska 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. He will meet No. 53 ranked Sascha Heinemann of Hawaii in the second round on Tuesday.
Barrick opened play with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Phil Stephens of Tulsa. He will play Tyler Hochwalt of Florida in the second round.
On Tuesday, the qualifying doubles draw will begin. The team of Shabaz and Dominic Inglot (London, England), the No. 5 seed, will open play against Emauel Brighiu and Adrian Simon of TCU.
Qualifying continues through Wednesday with the main draw set to begin on Thursday. Inglot is in the main draw for singles due to his preseason ranking, while Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) received a wild card to the main draw by winning the ITA Summer Championship. The team of Singh and Barrick also received a wild card into the doubles main draw by winning the ITA Summer Championship.
