BLACKSBURG, Va. The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team suffered its first loss in conference play this season, falling to Virginia Tech 1-0 Thursday night at Thompson Field. Julian Johnson’s goal just after halftime was all the Hokies needed, as Virginia couldn’t take advantage of their 17-5 shot edge in the game.
“Give Virginia Tech credit, they deserved to win,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We didn’t come out with the same energy level as we have had in recent games and we paid the price for it.”
The game remained scoreless through the first half despite the Cavaliers’ 7-2 shot advantage. Early in the second half, the Hokies took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute as a free kick played into the box found Johnson, who curled a shot under the crossbar for her third goal of the season. The Cavaliers continued to pressure to find the equalizer, including Nikki Krzysik’s (Clifton, Va.) header off the crossbar in the 72nd minute, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
The Cavaliers will conclude the road portion of its 2008 regular season schedule next Thursday, Oct. 16 as they visit Maryland. Game time at Ludwig Field in College Park is 7 p.m.
