TULSA, Okla. – Cavalier sophomore Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA All-America Championships as play continued Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Shabaz defeated No. 14 ranked Bruno Rosa of Rice 6-0, 6-4 in the round of 16. It marks the second consecutive top 20 player he has beaten, after upsetting No. 2 Denes Lukacs of Baylor in the second round on Thursday. He will meet No. 31 ranked Enrique Oliveras of East Tennessee State in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
By reaching the quarterfinals, Shabaz secured a singles berth in the ITA National Indoor Championships, which will be held Nov. 6-9 at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
With Shabaz reaching the quarterfinals, it marks the fourth consecutive year that the Cavaliers have had a quarterfinalist at the event. That streak is the longest active streak in the nation.
In the singles backdraw, Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) advanced to the quarterfinals after Holden Seguso of UCLA withdrew. Barrick will meet Abdullah Magdas of USC on Saturday.
In doubles, the team of Barrick and Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) fell in the second round to No. 4 seeded Austin Krajicek and Conor Pollock 8-3.
The tournament continues on Saturday at the University of Tulsa and concludes on Sunday.
