UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. Virginia field hockey coach Michele Madison announced Saturday that Liz Hiltz rejoined the team. Hiltz, a forward, previously lettered for the Cavaliers in 2005 and ’06.
Additionally, first-year Paige Selenski returned from playing with the United States Under-21 team at the Junior Pan American Cup in Mexico City, Mexico.
“Liz has come to the rescue in our time of need,” Madison said. “She will arrive in State College two hours before game time, ready to jump on the field when needed. With the injury status of the roster, we were scrambling to get 10 field players on the turf for 70 minutes.
“Terry Walsh, high performance director for the U.S. hockey national teams, also released Paige Selenski to return to the team for our games this weekend.”
Hiltz, a fourth-year, has played in 24 career games with five starts for Virginia. She has one career goal, which came against Pacific in 2006, and three career assists. A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Hiltz is the older sister of Kaitlyn Hiltz, a second-year with the Cavaliers.
Selenski, a native of Shavertown, Pa., leads Virginia with 13 goals this season and also has six assists. She was named the womensfieldhockey.com National Rookie of the Week Monday after recording four goals and three assists last week against Richmond and top-ranked Maryland.
The U.S. Under-21 team beat Mexico 6-1 Friday in the semifinals and advances to play Chile (beat Argentina 3-1) in the gold medal match Sunday in Mexico City. Selenski recorded a hat trick in Team USA’s 7-1 win over Trinidad & Tobago earlier in the week.
No. 10 Virginia (10-3, 1-1 ACC) plays fifth-ranked Iowa at 2 p.m. today in University Park, Pa.
