Virginia vs. East Carolina Oct. 11, 2008
Today’s win was the first by UVa in the series. The Pirates won 31-21 in 2006 in Greenville and 61-10 in 1975 in Charlottesville in the only other meetings.
UVa’s Cedric Peerman’s 79-yard TD run in the first quarter was the longest rush of his career. It was also:
Ties for seventh longest rushing play in UVa history
Ties as the fifth longest rush for TD in UVa history
Ties as the third longest TD run by a Cavalier in Scott Stadium history.
Today’s game marks the second time UVa tailback Cedric Peerman has rushed for two TDs in a game. He did it vs. Pittsburgh in 2007.
Cedric Peerman became the second player in UVa history to record two runs of 60-or-more yards (79 & 60) in the same game. The other was John Papit vs. Washington & Lee in 1948 (63 yards TD & 60 yards TD).
Before today, the last UVa player to have two runs of 50+ yards in a game was Barry Word vs. Georgia Tech in 1985 (79 yards TD, 52 yards).
Virginia rushed for a season-high 202 yards today, eclipsing the previous high of 201 vs. Maryland last week.
QB Marc Verica had his second impressive performance in a row today. He tied his career-high with 25 completions (he also had 25 last week vs. Maryland) for 216 yards, the second-highest total of his career. He also threw a TD pass for the second game in a row.
UVa senior QB Scott Deke had his first career TD pass today. It was just the ninth pass of his UVa career and the fourth reception.
Deke’s touchdown pass was a 12-yard toss to TE John Phillips and came off a fake field goal. The play was UVa’s first pass out of field goal formation since Matt Schaub threw a 10-yard pass to Heath Miller for a first down against Virginia Tech in 2003.
The last time UVa had two runs for 50+ yards in a game was the 1990 contest vs. Navy when David Brown had a 55-yard carry (no score) and Nikki Fisher ran for a 54-yard TD.
WR Kevin Ogletree entered the game with 927 career receiving yards and finished with 65 today to push his career total to 992 yards. He needs eight yards to become the 28th player in school history with 1000 in a career.
Cedric Peerman set a career high with a team-leading eight receptions today. His previous high was seven last week vs. Maryland.
ILB Antonio Appleby led the team in tackling for the second game in a row with a season-high 11 tackles, including seven solo stops. He also had a sack, his first of the season.
OLB Clint Sintim, the ACC’s Defensive Lineman of the Week last week, had another tremendous performance against the Pirates. He finished with seven tackles for the second game in a row, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass. Included in his seven tackles were two sacks, his third game in a row with a sack. He has had six sacks in the last three games.
Sintim has been involved in eight sacks this season (6 solo, 2 shared) and now has 24 career sacks, tied with Patrick Kerney (1995-98) for fourth in school history. He is also second behind Darryl Blackstock (27 from 202-04) for most sacks by a linebacker in UVa history.
UVa redshirt freshman Jared Green’s 19-yard reception in the second quarter is the longest of his career.
UVa redshirt freshman placekicker Chris Hinkebein and true freshman kicker Robert Randolph played for the first time in their careers. They become the 21st and 22nd Cavalier players to see their first collegiate playing time this season.
UVa tight end Andrew Devlin made his first career start today. The redshirt freshman started as part of a two tight end set for the Cavaliers’ first play from scrimmage. He caught two passes for 16 yards, both career-high figures.
Former UVa All-American tight end Heath Miller raised the Power of Orange flag during today’s pregame festivities.
East Carolina Notes
Wide receiver Dwayne Harris had a career high with 128 receiving yards, eclipsing his old mark of 88 yards vs. NC State earlier this season. His 52-yard reception in the third quarter was the longest catch of his career.
Running back Jon Williams set career highs for carries (19) and rushing yards (95).
This is the fewest points by the Pirates in the first half since getting shut out by Marshall in the first half of a 26-7 loss on Nov. 10, 2007.
This is ECU’s largest halftime deficit since trailing West Virginia 27-0 on Sept. 22, 2007. The Mountaineers went on to win 48-7.
Cedric Peerman’s 166 rushing yards are the most against ECU since DeAngelo Williams of Memphis gained 226 during the 2005 season.
Today’s game marks the second consecutive week ECU has allowed an opponent running back 100-or-more rushing yards. Houston’s Bryce Beall had 130 rushing yards and two rushing TDs in a 41-24 victory over the Pirates.
East Carolina’s first two field goals came after UVa interceptions.
