“We certainly applaud Virginia in their efforts today, in the things that they did. They played a good football game. (Cedric) Peerman ran extremely well and obviously he was a big part of this puzzle today. Probably when you break it down, in the first half we had an opportunity on offense offensively, we caught a few turnovers early and got some really good field position, we just couldn’t make anything happen with it. We could’ve had the opportunity to put the ball into the end zone and score touchdowns.”
On ECU’s players:
“I was really, really pleased with the way they continued to hang in there, the way they continued to fight. They didn’t hang their heads. They’re competing hard and they want to be good and they’re playing hard and we just continue to make some mistakes we can’t make. Right now we’ve got some bumps and bruises, we’re going to have to look at the injury report and I know a lot of guys went out of this game with shoulders. I don’t know at this point who will be back and who won’t. I know we took a blow today with some of the injuries we incurred.”
On UVa:
“You look at Virginia’s playing really good football right now. They proved that last week when Maryland came into town and they played a good football game and they relied on their offensive line and their running game and tried to take their quarterback out and make him invisible and I think they kind of exposed him early. I think they’re a good football team and I don’t know that I’d look at it and say we’re in a slide. I think last week was obviously our worst week. I think offensively we’re not near as efficient as we need to be as an offensive football team.”
On ECU’s offensive line:
“I thought offensively we did some pretty decent things. We just don’t do them consistently enough. You get to fourth and two and fourth and one it’s not like you’re looking at a lot of fourth and 20s. We just can’t get anything going where you’re doing it consistently enough. We came out here and made some first downs. I think some guys made some really good runs. We just don’t do it consistently enough. I think there were some really good individual performances.”
On UVa’s fake field goal:
“I wouldn’t say [I was] shocked. I almost took a timeout. I probably should’ve because they rushed it. You have 40 seconds and it was a screen pass and it was down on the sideline. They were running guys in, running guys out and it was real rush rush and I should’ve smelled a rat and called a time out. I should’ve called a timeout. That’s not on the players.”
On why the team did not win:
“It’s not one thing. It’s just like I said coming in, it’s just a matter of us being able to execute on third down. We don’t do that consistent enough. We don’t execute on first down consistent enough. We don’t execute on second down consistent enough. We don’t do anything as consistent enough as we need to, and we don’t have the home run player we had a year ago, we don’t have a receiver who’s going to run by anybody, we don’t have a tailback that’s going to outrun everybody. So we’ve got to take the ball and we’ve got to methodically move it down the field and if one play we get no gain or move it back a yard, we’re behind the chains. We don’t do it consistently enough and that’s the biggest problem with our offensive football team right now.”
On ECU’s goal coming out of the locker room:
“We wanted to score. We’ve got to get the ball in the end zone. We’re not going to get this thing done by kicking field goals. We’ve got to exhaust everything we’ve got. Let’s throw everything at them, let’s not hold anything back and let’s not say, Well, what if we would’ve done this, that or the other?’ Let’s turn and exhaust every resource.”
