A Message from the Director
Welcome to the Athletic Academic Affairs website. The Athletic Academic Affairs Office is responsible for coordinating and providing appropriate and the highest quality academic support to all student-athletes at the University of Virginia. Our commitment to Uncompromised Excellence is guided by the pursuit of our mission which is:
“The Athletics Academic Affairs Office supports the efforts of every student-athlete in attaining a degree from the University of Virginia. The Athletics Academic Affairs Office coordinates student-athletes’ academic needs to empower and inspire achievement in the classroom, as well as within their sport. The mission is to provide support and resources, aid in personal development, and create independent lifelong learners in accordance with the mission of the University and the Department of Athletics”.
It is due to this commitment along with the tireless effort of current and former Virginia student-athletes that the University has continued to achieve such a high level of success both academically and athletically. The University of Virginia remains the number 2 best public university in the 2010 edition of the U.S. News and World Report rankings. In the 13 years since U.S. News began ranking public universities as a separate category, U.Va. has ranked either number 1 or number 2. The University of Virginia continues to rank in the Top 25 among the best of all national universities, public and private, at number 24. Additionally, during the 2008-2009 year, the University of Virginia Department of Athletics finished 8th in the nation in the coveted Directors Cup and has been in the top 20 in 4 of the last 6 years. The Directors Cup is a program that ranks the competitive success of athletic departments.
For the 15th straight year, the University of Virginia’s African-American students posted the highest graduation rate among those at all public universities in the nation, according to the annual compilation published by the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education. The journal, using data from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, deliberately highlights public universities because three-fourths of African-American students in college attend them. The journal reports that U.Va.’s graduation rate of 87 percent makes it “the leader by far in successfully graduating black students” at flagship state universities. While the goal of Department of Athletics is to graduate 100% of student-athletes who exhaust their eligibility, those Virginia student-athletes currently graduate at an astounding rate of 93%.
