CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. After falling into 4-0 hole, Virginia baseball’s Blue Team scored five unanswered runs to earn a 5-4 win in Game 3 of the Orange and Blue World Series Monday evening at Davenport Field. The Blue Team takes the first three-game series, two games to one, with all three games decided by one run. The teams now will play a second three-game series as well as a seventh game which could ultimately decide the World Series.

Matt Packer (Jr., Germantown, Tenn.) earned the win for the Blue with 4.2 scoreless innings of relief. He allowed just two hits and struck out six. Kevin Arico (So., Flemington, N.J.) took the loss after giving up two runs in the eighth inning.

Once again, the starting pitching was strong on both sides. the Orange’s Neal Davis (Jr., Baltimore, Md.) tossed five perfect innings and whiffed three, while the Blue’s Andrew Carraway (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) pitched four scoreless innings before allowing four runs (two earned) in the fifth inning.

Phil Gosselin (So., West Chester, Pa.) led the Blue offense with two hits and two RBI, while the Orange Team got two hits each from John Bivens (Jr., Disputanta, Va.) and Shane Halley (Fr., Burke, Va.).

The teams played four innings of scoreless baseball before the Orange broke loose for four in the fifth inning. After loading the bases with none out, the Orange got RBI singles from Halley and Tyler Cannon (Jr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.), then scored two more on a throwing error.

The Blue chipped away with three runs in the sixth inning, with the big blow coming from Gosselin, who hit a two-run single to plate Jarrett Parker (So., Stafford, Va.) and David Coleman (So., Richmond, Va.). In the eighth, the Blue got a game-tying RBI triple from Dan Grovatt, who then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jared King (Fr., Radford, Va.).

The teams play Game 4 of the Orange and Blue World Series at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
