COLLEGE PARK, Md. Sophomore Colleen Flanagan (Downingtown, Pa.) scored her first career goal in the 94th minute to lift No. 9 Virginia to a 3-2 overtime win at Maryland Thursday night at Ludwig Field. The win was the Cavaliers’ school record fourth ACC road win of the season as they improve to 11-2-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the conference.
“This was great win as this has historically been a difficult place for us to win,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “I think it is even a bigger win given how the game played out. Give Maryland a lot of credit for fighting back from being down 2-0. Down the stretch and especially into overtime I thought we really increased our attack and were able to get the game-winner in overtime.”
The Cavaliers took the early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 13th minute. Nikki Krzysik (Clifton, N.J.) slid a ball behind the defense onto the run of Lauren Alwine (Elizabethtown, Pa.), who fired in her fourth goal of the season. In the 21st minute the Cavaliers doubled their advantage. After Sinead Farrelly (Havertown, Pa.) was fouled in the box, Krzysik converted the ensuing penalty kick for her third goal of the season. Maryland closed the lead to 2-1 in the 26th minute as a ball came to Annesia Faulkner at the edge of the penalty area, who drove a ball inside the far post for her first goal of the season.
Early in the second half, the Terrapins tied the game with a penalty kick of their own, scored by Nataly Arias. The game remained tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation.
The Cavaliers had control of the play early in overtime and scored the game-winner four minutes in. Alwine sent a corner kick to the far post that Flanagan headed in to give Virginia the victory.
With the three goals, the Cavaliers set a new school record with 19 goals in ACC play this season. That breaks the previous record of 17 goals scored against conference opponents in 2004. The Cavaliers set the record with four games still remaining in ACC play.
The victory snapped a three-game winless streak for Virginia at Maryland (0-2-1), as the Cavaliers had been shutout in each of their last three trips to College Park.
The Cavaliers will return home on Sunday to begin a season-ending four-game homestand. Virginia hosts No. 14 Boston College at 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast online by ACC Select.
