CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. The 14th-ranked Virginia men’s soccer team fell on the road at Boston College Friday night, 1-0. Eagles’ midfielder Edvin Worley scored the game-winner in the 65th minute to give Boston College the victory.
“It was a very even game,” said Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch. “We played hard and competed hard but it wasn’t our best performance tonight. We had two very good chances to score and in a game like this you need to score on one of them.”
The loss ended a six-game win streak for Virginia (8-4-0, 4-1-0 ACC), and it was just the second time this season the Cavaliers have been shut out.
After a scoreless first half, Worley’s goal was assisted by Alejandro Bedoya and Paul Gerstenberger. Boston College had a restart near midfield and Worley headed the service past Virginia goalkeeper Michael Giallombardo. Giallombardo finished the game with four saves.
Boston College (7-4-2, 3-2-0 ACC) held a slim advantage in shots, 13-12, while the corner kicks for the match were even at five apiece. Cavalier forward Brian Ownby led the team with seven shots, while Jonathan Villanueva and Neil Barlow each had one shot on goal.
In goal for BC, Chris Brown recorded the shutout and finished with two saves.
Up next for Virginia is a home match vs. Longwood on Tuesday. Kick-off from Klckner Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
