CHARLOTTESVILLE Virginia men’s basketball coach Dave Leitao announced Friday that two players will miss the start of preseason practice, which begins today. Junior forward Jamil Tucker and junior guard Calvin Baker both suffered injuries that will keep them from participating as the preseason begins.
Tucker suffered a right shoulder injury that will require several of weeks of rehabilitation for strengthening. Last season the Gary, Ind. native appeared in 31 games, starting three, and averaged 5.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
Baker experienced a stress related foot injury and will be held out indefinitely pending further evaluation. Last season the Newport News, Va. native made his Cavalier debut after transferring from William & Mary, appearing in all 33 games, starting eight, and averaging 8.6 points and 2.4 assists per game.
The Cavaliers will open the 2008-09 season on November 9 when they host Shepherd (W.Va.) in an exhibition game at John Paul Jones Arena. The regular season begins on November 16 as the Cavaliers host VMI.
