CHAPEL HILL, N.C. The 13th-ranked Virginia field hockey team (11-6, 1-2 ACC) was beaten by No. 7 North Carolina (11-3, 3-1 ACC) 3-0 Saturday at Francis E. Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. The game was broadcast on ACC Select and can be achieved at www.accselect.com.
North Carolina had a solid defensive outing in its first games without ACC scoring leader Danielle Forword, who tore her ACL last weekend and will miss the remainder of the season. Virginia was limited to just five shots in the game, only one of which was on target.
UNC finished with 16 shots in the winning effort and also outcornered Virginia 9-2.
Virginia’s 3-0 setback was the largest deficit of the season. Previously the Cavaliers had trailed by two goals against Iowa last weekend.
North Carolina led 2-0 at halftime after goals from Britt van Beek, her 10th of the season, and Teryn Brill, her second.
Virginia’s lone shot on goal came late in the first half on the Cavaliers’ second penalty corner. Kaitlyn Hiltz pushed the ball out to stick stopper Lucy Meyers. Meyers put it in front of Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn and her shot was saved by UNC keeper Jackie Kintzer.
The Tar Heels concluded the first half with a 7-3 shot advantage.
UNC’s second goal came in the 70th minute. Kate Scholl received a pass from Brill on the left post and was able to put it past Virginia’s Adrienne Ostroff, who played in just her second college game. Ostroff, who started the second half, finished with four saves while teammate Amy Desjadon had three.
The Cavaliers have a week off before playing host to Wake Forest at 1 p.m. next Saturday (Oct. 25) at the U-Hall Turf Field.
