CHAPEL HILL, N.C. The Virginia men’s tennis team concluded play at the ITA Mideast Championships by winning both the singles and doubles championships. Dominic Inglot (London, England) repeated as the singles champion while the team of Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) won the doubles championship.
“I was really pleased with how the team as a whole played this week,” said head coach Brian Boland. “To win both the singles and doubles titles in a region like this where there are so many great teams and players is a real accomplishment.”
Inglot, who became the first ever Cavalier to win the ITA Mideast Region singles title last year, repeated with a pair of wins Monday. Top-seeded Inglot downed Damon Gooch of Elon 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals before topping No. 2 seed Cory Parr of Wake Forest 6-1, 6-4 in the final. Parr had defeated Barrick 6-2, 6-3 in the other semifinal.
“For Dom to win the regional for a second time is a tremendous accomplishment,” said Boland. “The Mideast Regional always is so competitive and Dom did a good job of playing at a high level this week.”
The team of Barrick and Singh became the second Cavalier team to win the regional doubles title, joining Rylan Rizza and Darrin Cohen in 2006. In Monday’s final, they topped the team of Andy Juc and Bo Ladyman of Furman 8-6.
By reaching the final of singles, Inglot earned a place in the 32-player singles draw at the ITA National Indoor Championships, which will be held at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club November 6-9. He will be one of three Cavaliers in the field, joining Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.), who qualified by reaching the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships earlier this month, and a wild card entry that Virginia receives for being the tournament host. With their doubles title, the team of Barrick and Singh will be in the 16-team doubles field at the tournament, along with another Cavalier team that will get a wild card for being the host.
“We are looking forward to hosting the National Indoor Individuals for the first time next month and are thrilled that we will have so many players in the field,” said Boland. “It will truly be an exciting event for our team and our fans.”
