CHARLOTTESVILLE No. 22 Virginia hosts Longwood in non-conference men’s soccer action Tuesday night. Kick-off from Klckner Stadium is 7 p.m. and live statistics are available at VirginiaSports.com.
Virginia (8-4-0, 4-1-1 ACC) is coming off of a road loss at Boston College, 1-0, Friday night. Prior to that setback, the Cavaliers had won six-consecutive games. Freshman Tony Tchani continues to lead the team with nine goals, three assists and 21 points. In terms of conference statistics, those totals rank Tchani fifth in goals and points.
Jimmy Simpson (four goals, two assists), Matt Mitchell (three goals, three assists) and Brian Ownby (two goals, one assist) have also provided offensive firepower for the Cavaliers, while freshmen defenders Howard Turk (only player to start all 12 games) and Hunter Jumper (four assists) have anchored the UVa defense.
In goal, Michael Giallombardo has started the last seven contests for UVa and allowed just two goals.
Virginia leads the series with Longwood, 4-0-0, in match-ups dating back to the 1984 season. The last meeting between the two teams was in 2005, a 4-0 UVa victory in Charlottesville.
Longwood (6-5-1, 1-0-0 Atlantic Soccer Conference) is coming off of a loss at North Florida on Oct. 14, 3-1. The Lancers are led by Harvey Headley (five goals, one assist), Brian Germain (three goals) and Kevin Chico (three goals).
In goal for Longwood, three different players have seen time, but Joel Helmich has started nine of the Lancers’ 10 games. He has allowed 12 goals and made 40 saves for a 1.33 goals-against average.
