CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA John Phillips has been named the John Mackey National Tight End of the Week by the by the Nassau County Sports Commission. The senior from Warm Springs, Va., caught five passes for 38 yards in the Cavaliers’ thrilling 16-13 overtime win over longtime rival North Carolina last Saturday. He had a game-changing 19-yard reception to the 4-yard line to set up Cedric Peerman’s winning touchdown two plays later.
Phillips has caught 30 passes for 271 yards and one touchdown this season and ranks ninth in the country in receiving among tight ends.
The Nassau County Sports Commission presents the John Mackey Award to the nation’s best tight end every year. Former Cavalier standout Heath Miller, now with the Pittsburgh Steelers, won the award in 2004.
The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. This weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by tight ends during the active season, but does not have a direct bearing on the final John Mackey Award selection process.
