CHARLOTTESVILLE Fresh off its fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships and ninth-straight ACC Championship, the Virginia rowing team gets its fall season underway with the Princeton Chase on Sunday. Races begin at noon at Lake Carnegie, N.J.
The Princeton Chase is an invitation head-to-head race hosted by the Princeton University crew coaching staff for women collegiate crews, including novices. The women’s varsity eight will race at noon, followed by the women’s novice eight at 1:30 p.m., the small boats events at 4 p.m. and the women’s varsity four at 4:30 p.m.
Returning rowers from last year’s varsity eight include All-Americans Jennifer Cromwell and Lauren Hutchins, as well as Desiree Burns and Augusta Stratos. Also returning for the Cavaliers are Amanda Chase, Lauren Shook, Helen Tompkins, Marie Long, Claudia Blandford, Annie Bohlen and Victoria Burke, who rowed with the second varsity eight at the 2008 NCAA Championships.
From last year’s varsity four that competed at the national championships, coxswain Cristine Candland and Nora Phillips return.
UVa welcomes several talented newcomers to this year’s squad, and begins it annual quest for an NCAA Championship with its fall regattas.
Beginning with the Princeton Chase, the Cavaliers will race in five fall events: The Blue Island Challenge (Nov. 2, Chicago, Ill.), vs. Georgetown and George Washington (Nov. 8, Novices, Charlottesville, Va.), vs. Iowa in a scrimmage (Nov. 14, Charlottesville, Va.) and The Rivanna Romp (Nov. 16, Charlottesville, Va.).
