CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The 13th-ranked Virginia field hockey team (11-7, 1-3 ACC) fell to second-ranked Wake Forest (15-2, 2-2 ACC) by a score of 6-2 Saturday at the University Hall Turf Field. Third-year Traci Ragukas and first-year Paige Selenski netted goals for the Cavaliers, who played their final home game of the season. Wake Forest’s six goals were the most allowed by Virginia this season. Previously, the Cavaliers allowed four in a 4-3 loss at home to Maryland in overtime back on Oct. 4.
The Demon Deacons outshot Virginia 21-9 and also had a slight edge on penalty corners, 6-5. Additionally, 16 of Wake’s 21 shots were on target.
The Cavaliers played all three of their goalies in the contest. First-year Adrienne Ostroff made her first career start and played until the 32nd minute until fifth-year Amy Desjadon took over. Desjadon continued in the cage for the remainder of the first half and started the second. She was relieved by second-year Devon Burnley, who played the final 16:42. Burley finished with four saves; Ostroff three and Desjadon one.
Virginia got on the board first, scoring in the seventh minute. Selenski notched her team-leading 16th goal of the season.
Wake Forest then scored six straight goals. Not flinching after the Cavalier score, the Demon Deacons took it right down the field and scored 1:13 later. Hilary Moore picked up a rebounded shot that was saved by Ostroff and put it in.
In the 13th minute, Wake converted a penalty corner. Minou Gimbrere hit it in with assists from teammates Michelle Kasold and Melissa Martin. In the 21st minute, Moore notched her second score of the game with Kasold on the assist.
The Demon Deacons led 4-1 at halftime.
Wake came out and got two scores from Martin early in the second half. Both goals were unassisted that Martin picked up either off a goalie save or a shot that was blocked by a Virginia defender. Raisa Schiller rounded out the Wake Forest scoring effort in the 49th minute.
Virginia was able to get a score in the second stanza when Ragukas received a cross from second-year Taylor Swezey for her 11th goal of the year.
The game marked the final game at home for four Virginia seniors: Desjadon, Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn, Liz Hiltz and Lucy Meyers.
The Cavaliers conclude regular season play at Duke next Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
