Virginia vs. Georgia Tech Postgame Notes
Virginia won in Atlanta for the fourth time since 1990, the last year Georgia Tech won in Charlottesville.
UVa’s win over the No. 21 Yellow Jackets is its second win in a row over a ranked team. Last week UVa defeated No. 18 North Carolina.
This is the first time since 2002 Virginia has defeated ranked teams in back-to-back weeks. UVa defeated NC State (No. 20) and No. 18 Maryland that season.
This is UVa’s first win over a ranked team on the road since winning at No. 19 Clemson in 2001.
Virginia’s field goal on its opening drive for only the second time this season. The Cavaliers also kicked a field goal on their opening possession against Richmond.
ILB Darren Childs made the first start of his career in place of an injured Antonio Appleby.
Nate Collins started at nose tackle in place of Nick Jenkins, who was injured late in the North Carolina game last week.
Georgia Tech’s touchdown on its first possession marks the third game in a row Virginia’s opponent scored on its opening drive. North Carolina scored a TD last week, while East Carolina kicked a field goal two weeks ago. It is also the fourth time Virginia has given up a touchdown on the opponents’ first driveConnecticut and South California also scored TDs on their first possession.
Kevin Ogletree’s TD catch in the second quarter is his fourth of the year, tying his career high set two years ago. It also the most by a Cavalier since Ogletree’s ’06 performance.
The TD catch marks the second time in his career Ogletree has caught a TD pass vs. Georgia Tech in Atlanta. He scored UVa’s only TD in a 24-7 loss here two years ago.
Ogletree has now caught at least 2 passes in 20 consecutive games dating back to the beginning of the 2006 season. He missed all of last season with an injury.
Meanwhile, Maurice Covington extended his streak to four games with at least 3 receptions. He also had his first TD reception of the season in the third quarter. His uncle, Tom Covington, was a wide receiver at Georgia Tech from 1988-91.
Covington set a career high for receptions (5) and tied his career high for receiving yards (76).
Mikell Simpson caught a 23-yard pass on his first play of the game, his longest of the season (by more than double). Cedric Peerman’s 24-yard pass reception late in the first half is his longest of the season (and one away from the longest of his career).
Peerman finished with his third 100-yard game of the season and sixth of his career.
Marc Verica threw for a career-high 270 yards. His previous high was 226 yards vs. Maryland three weeks ago.
Nate Collins had his first fumble recovery of the season early in the third quarter. It is his second career fumble recovery (Miami, 2007). Denzel Burrell also recovered his first fumble of the season later in the third quarter; it is his second career fumble recovery (kickoff return recovery vs. Pittsburgh, 2007).
Collins also finished with a career high six tackles today. His previous high was 5 tackles vs. Wyoming last year and against Southern California in the first game this season.
Clint Sintim was in on two sacks, the fifth game in a row he’s been in on at least one sack. His 5-game streak is the longest by a UVa linebacker since Darryl Blackstock had a 5-game run back in 2002.
Rodney McLeod had his first sack of his career for a loss of 16 yards. It is also the first sack by a UVa defensive back this year.
