CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team couldn’t swing the momentum from Florida State Saturday evening in Memorial Gymnasium and fell to the Seminoles, 0-3 (22-25, 23-25, 24-26) in Atlantic Coast Conference action. The Cavaliers fall to 13-10 on the season and 5-6 in the ACC, while Florida State improves to 14-7 and 6-5 in the league.
First-year Simone Asque (Chicago, Ill.) led the team in kills with nine, while second-year Sydney Hill (Kalamazoo, Mich.) landed eight kills and three blocks for the match.
Third-year Brittani Rendina (Lisle, Ill.) led the defense with 15 digs, while fifth-year Beth Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio) contributed a season-high 14.
Second-year Kelly Irvin (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) led the team with 15 assists and fourth-year Marlow Bruneau (Lakeville, Minn.) contributed 12.
Third-year Lauren Dickson (Austin, Texas) had a season-high four service aces.
Florida State was led by Lauren Richardson’s 14 kills and Ashlee Moon’s 21 digs. Nikki Baker dished out 39 assists.
The Cavaliers took an early lead in the first set with a 4-0 run. Florida State stepped up its game and tied the score at 18, before taking a three-point lead and forcing Virginia to call a timeout at 21-18. Florida State came out of the intermission strong and finished the set with a kill to win 25-22.
Virginia started the second set with another 4-0 run under Dickson’s serve and expanded that lead to 14-8, forcing the Seminoles to take a timeout. Florida State came back from the deficit to tie the score at 18. The two teams battled back and forth until Florida State captured a 25-23 win with a kill by Richardson.
With the score tied at 23, a ball handling error on the Cavaliers gave the Seminoles the lead before a kill by Bruneau tied the score again at 24 all. A kill by the Seminoles once again gave Florida State the advantage, which Jordana Price followed with a game-winning kill for the Seminoles that brought the final score to 26-24.
The Cavaliers head on the road next weekend, facing Clemson and Georgia Tech on Friday, Oct. 31 and Saturday, Nov. 1, respectively. Virginia fell to both teams earlier this season and both matches are slated for 7 p.m.
