PHILADELPHIA — The doubles team of Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) and Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) advanced to the doubles final of the 2008 ITA East Regional as play continued at the University of Pennsylvania.
Stevens and Fraser, the No. 8 seed in the draw, won a pair of matches Monday to reach the final. In the quarterfinals, the team upset No. 1 seed and No. 14 ranked Kellie Schmitt and Karolina Soor of Marshall 8-5. They followed that win with an 8-3 victory over Denise Harijanto and Diana Popescu of Buffalo in the semifinals. They will meet Charleen Haarhoff and Nadine Fahoum of Old Dominion in the final on Tuesday. With a victory in the final, the team will automatically qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships held at the Boar’s Head Sports Club November 6-9.
In singles, the Cavaliers had four players in the round of 16, but none were able to advance to the semifinals on Monday. Stevens scored a 6-1, 6-2 win over Molly Scott of Dartmouth in the round of 16, but fell to Lauren Cash of Boston College 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Fraser topped Janet Kim of Yale 6-1, 7-5 in the round of 16, but fell to Lauren McHale of Princeton 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) lost in the round of 16 to Lana Krasnopolsky of Boston College 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16 and Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) fell in the round of 16 to No. 2 seed and No. 94 ranked Katarina Zoricic of William & Mary 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
The doubles final will be Tuesday at 9 a.m.
