Virginia Hosts American Tuesday Night

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia hosts American Tuesday night in non-conference men’s soccer action. Kick-off from Klckner Stadium is 7 p.m. and live statistics are available at VirginiaSports.com.

Virginia (8-5-1, 4-2-0 ACC) is coming off of a tough 1-0 overtime loss at Duke Saturday night. The Cavaliers were whistled for a foul in the penalty box and Blue Devil forward Mike Grella converted a penalty kick to give Duke the win.

American marks the last regular-season non-conference opponent for the Cavaliers. UVa leads the all-time series, 13-3-0, and won the two teams’ last meeting which was an exhibition match in 2005.

Jimmy Simpson (six goals, two assists), Matt Mitchell (three goals, three assists) and Brian Ownby (two goals, two assists) lead the Cavalier offense, with Simpson scoring twice in UVa’s last home outing (Oct. 21 vs. Longwood). In goal for Virginia, Michael Giallombardo has started the last nine games and allowed five goals for a 0.54 goals-against average.

American (7-5-2, 3-0-1 Patriot League) is led by Anthony Moy with four goals and Karsten Smith and Daniel Shannon with three goals apiece. In goal for the Eagles, Matt Makowski has started 14 games and allowed 15 goals while making 53 saves.

Up next for Virginia are two home ACC contests to close out the regular-season. Virginia welcomes Maryland to Klckner Stadium on Friday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m., and Wake Forest on Friday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.
