Virginia closes out the regular-season with two final home games at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers face Maryland on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. and Wake Forest on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. Matt Mitchell recently checked in with VirginiaSports.com to talk about UVa’s recent win over American and looking ahead to the end of the regular-season and the ACC Tournament.
Question: You scored your fourth goal of the year and assisted on another in the 4-2 win over American. What were your thoughts on your game?
Mitchell: It was great to get that first goal of the game. I felt like it really lifted us up and helped us on our way to getting our second, third and fourth goals.
Question: Head coach George Gelnovatch calls this team his youngest in nearly 10 years. What is it like being an upperclassman among so much youth?
Mitchell: Well it’s just all about setting a good example on and off the field for these guys. I want to be someone they can look up to. They are very capable of playing at this level and I also want to show them that.
Question: What has been your most memorable moment of the season so far?
Mitchell: The six-game win streak that we had in the middle of the season. We put ourselves in a great position, so although we did have a couple losses recently [at Boston College and Duke], I would rather go down now and learn from our mistakes.
Question: How do you think your team has handled adversity this year?
Mitchell: We have had people step up and fill in for various injured players, which I think has shown our depth. Everybody on this team is capable of playing at a high level.
Question: Your last two home opponents are Maryland, currently ranked No. 4, and Wake Forest, currently ranked No. 1. How are you preparing for those games?
Mitchell: Those are definitely two victories we would like to have, and with them being ranked so high and having success in the league we feel like we are in an underdog position.
Question: Have you thought ahead to the ACC Tournament and what it will take to win the conference title?
Mitchell: Well the ACC Tournament is the start of postseason, so we treat it like a fresh start and a new season.
