As fans entered Scott Stadium for Virginia’s football game against North Carolina on Oct. 18, several patrons experienced strict enforcement of the venue policy prohibiting bags. We apologize for the confusion at the stadium gates prior to the North Carolina game. Our policy prohibiting bags/backpacks in the stadium has been inconsistently enforced the last several years and we want to clarify that policy moving forward.
Bags will be permitted for the two remaining home games in the 2008 football season, but each bag is subject to inspection by stadium personnel. Bags or backpacks with multiple pockets or zippers are prohibited in Scott Stadium due to the time required to inspect each area of the bag. Tote bags, purses, and sport bags are permitted as long as they do not contain multiple pockets or zippers. All bags are subject to inspection by stadium personnel.
In order to expedite entrance into the stadium, it is recommended fans not bring bags to games and to arrive early at the stadium’s gates. Gates open two hours before kickoff.
Following is the security check policy for Virginia home football games:
Admission is subject to inspection and search for prohibited items. All persons entering the stadium will be subject to a visual search by stadium personnel before entering the gates. Event staff will also examine the contents of personal handbags. Guests will be asked to open their bags providing event staff the opportunity to observe the contents. If an item needs to be removed so the event staff member can see the remaining items in the bag, the guest will be asked to remove the item. The same procedure will be followed for items in a guest’s pockets. The guest will be asked to remove the item so the staff member can observe the pocket’s contents. If a guest is wearing a jacket, he/she will be asked to unzip the jacket and hold it open so that event staff can visually observe inside the jacket.
As a reminder, the following items are prohibited in Scott Stadium:
Horns, whistles, or artificial noisemakers of any kind
Alcoholic beverages
Audio Recorders
Bags and backpacks with multiple pockets or zippers
Balls of any type
Beverages
Containers
Coolers
Food of any kind
Glass bottles
Items that can be thrown, such as balls or Frisbees
Strollers (except umbrella strollers)
Tripods
Umbrellas
Video Cameras
Weapons
In conjunction with the University of Virginia Police Department, we have implemented procedures at Scott Stadium designed to provide a safe and positive experience for all fans in attendance at our games. We strive for consistency in implementing all of our policies and will continue to work with our staff to meet that goal.
