CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The 13th-ranked Virginia field hockey team (12-7, 2-3 ACC) earned the No. 4 seed and will play fifth-seeded Duke (14-4, 2-3) in the first round of the ACC Tournament which begins Thursday in Durham, N.C. First and second round games of the event will be shown live on ACC Select, while the championship will be a tape-delay broadcast on RSN.
The Cavaliers and host Blue Devils tied for fourth in the final conference standings, but after UVa edged No. 4 Duke 4-3 in the regular season finale over the weekend, the head-to-head advantage gave Virginia the higher seed. First-year Floor Vogels scored the game-winner on a penalty corner with 13:07 to play in the game.
The Virginia-Duke winner will face top-seeded Maryland (16-2, 4-1) in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Thursday. Second-seeded North Carolina (14-4, 3-2), meanwhile, will play the No. 3 Wake Forest (17-2, 3-2) and No. 6 Boston College (12-6, 1-4) winner at 7 p.m. Friday. The championship game is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
Last year, North Carolina defeated Wake Forest 4-3 in overtime to win the tournament championship.
