Kissimmee, FL Second-seeded Virginia lost to No. 7 seed Denver 3-1-1 and No. 6 seed Auburn 3-2 in the first day of play at the National Golf Coaches Association’s Match Play Championships. The Cavaliers face fourth-seeded USC Tuesday for seventh place in the 16-team tournament.
In Virginia’s morning match against Denver, Whitney Neuhauser picked up the Cavaliers only win, defeating Stephanie Sherlock 3&2. Joy Kim played the Pioneers’ Dawn Shockley to an all-square finish. Kristen Simpson fell to Sarah Faller 4&2, Calle Nielson lost to Katie Kempter 2&1 and Eleana Collins dropped her match to Ellie Givens 6&4.
Against Auburn, Nielson defeated Madison Overbey 5&4 and Joy Kim defeated Patricia Sanz 1 up in the Cavaliers only wins. Cydney Clanton dropped Simpson 4&3, Candace Schepperle defeated Neuhauser 1 up and Mariana Macias beat Collins 1 up to give the Tigers the victory.
