CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia freshman Jedd Moore (Mount Vernon, Ohio) started his college career in a spectacular fashion, winning the 157-pound title at the Eastern Michigan Open over the weekend. Moore won five-consecutive matches en route to the championship.
Eight Cavaliers, including Moore, competed unattached at the event, with seven placing in the top six of their respective weight classes. Danny Gonsor (So., Cleveland, Ohio) went 4-0 in the tournament and notched runner-up honors to Moore in the 157-pound class after taking an injury default in the championship match.
Michael Chaires (So., Scotia, N.Y.) rebounded after dropping his first match and won his final five matches to earn third place at 165, while Ross Gitomer (Jr., Flemington, N.J.) bounced back from an early defeat to take fourth place at 125.
In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Derek Valenti (Fr., Newton, N.J.) went 6-1, including three pins and a tech fall, in earning third place at 141. Ebe Nelson (Fr., Raytown, Mo.) racked up three wins two by major decision, one by pin as he took fourth place at heavyweight, while Mike Salopek (Fr., North Huntingdon, Pa.) earned sixth place at 184.
Virginia, ranked No. 23 nationally in the preseason, officially opens its season Sunday at the Michigan State Open in East Lansing.
